Men's Golf Finishes Fifth at Yale's Macdonald Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team took fifth place out of 12 teams at Yale University's Macdonald Cup over the weekend. The 54-hole event concluded Sunday on the par-70 Course at Yale.

Penn shot 282 in Saturday's first round, followed it with a 289 that afternoon, and then shot 298 on Sunday to finish the weekend at 29-over-par 869. That had the Red and Blue three strokes behind fourth-place Bucknell and nine behind host Yale. Minnesota easily won the team title, shooting 10-under-par 830 for the weekend which left them 24 strokes ahead of second-place Princeton. Among the other Ivy teams in the field, Harvard shot 874 and was seventh while Brown shot 923 to finish 12th.

The event allowed each team to field six players, with the low four scores in every round counting toward the team score. For Penn, junior Mitchell Cornell had another outstanding weekend as he finished the weekend at even-par 210 and finished fourth in a field of 75 golfers. Cornell carded a 2-under-par 68 in Saturday's first round and followed up with 71 in both rounds after that.

Sophomores Mark Haghani and Carter Prince shot even-par rounds on Saturday morning en route to carding 215 and 223, respectively, which left them tied for ninth and 34th. (Haghani also carded an under-par round on Saturday afternoon, a 68.) Freshman Anthony Basilio scored in both of Saturday's rounds and shot 229 to place 51st, while senior Eric Ganshaw had Penn's second-best score on Sunday and ended the weekend tied for 61st with a score of 236. Sophomore Caleb Blackburn, who had the Quakers' only eagle on the weekend, shot 238 for the weekend and tied for 64th in the field.

Minnesota also will head home with the individual hardware after taking the top two spots in the field. Angus Flanagan broke par in all three of his rounds over the weekend and ended the tournament at 6-under-par 204, while teammate Evan Long was second at 3-under-par 207.

Penn will conclude the fall portion of its season next week, playing the Hampton Intercollegiate which will be hosted on Long Island by Loyola (Md.). That 54-hole event will take place next Monday (Oct. 7) and Tuesday (Oct. 8).
