PHILADELPHIA – As the University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track & field programs reload for another year with high expectations, the James P. Tuppeny/Betty J. Costanza Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Steve Dolan announced on Monday a challenging 2019-20 schedule, featuring top competition around the country.
FULL SCHEDULE
"I am excited for the journey as we look ahead at the 2019-20 track & field season," Dolan said as plenty of familiar events remain on Penn's calendar. But with continued growth in the program, the Quakers are set to venture out to take on some new challenges as well.
The indoor season features an annual visit to the New York Armory, but also includes a new meet, a trip to Penn State's Sykes Sabok Challenge. The Texas Tech Shootout in Lubbock was an exciting addition to last year's schedule and will remain in place this season, set for Feb. 14-15.
Cornell will host the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships, scheduled for Feb. 29-March 1 and several Quakers will be in contention to qualify for the exclusive NCAA Indoor Championships, hosted in Albuquerque, N.M. March 13-14.
"One of our primary goals is to set up a schedule that allows both our men's and women's teams to excel at the highest level across all event areas," Dolan explained. "With the great venues we are set to visit and the national level competition we will see on a regular basis, we feel our schedule lives up to that goal."
Franklin Field hosts a pair of events again in 2020, beginning with the Penn Challenge in late March and, of course, the 126th running of the Penn Relays April 23-25. The outdoor season also includes a massive weekend with the teams splitting between the Florida State Relays and the Raleigh Relays in March and then the team splits again in April to compete at the Tennessee Relays and Bucknell's Distance Night.
Championship season begins with the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships on May 9-10 as the Ivies descend upon New Haven, Conn.
In 2019, a program-record 27 entrants qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla.; this season, Lexington, Ky. hosts the regional on May 28-30 with all national qualifiers traveling to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Finals on June 10-13.
The entire year then culminates with the USA Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., beginning June 19 and continuing through June 28.
