ITHACA, N.Y. – For the second time in as many weeks, the University of Pennsylvania men's golf team had two full teams in action over the weekend as the Quakers competed in the Cornell Invitational. The 54-hole event took place Saturday and Sunday on the par-71 Robert Trent Jones course on Cornell's campus.
Penn's A team sandwiched a pair of 293 scores around a 295 in the second round for a three-round score of 881, finishing 29 over par and tied for sixth (with Binghamton) in a field of 16 teams. Penn's B squad carded 299-297-303—897 and finished 13th with a 45-over-par score. Columbia took the team title, squeaking past Bucknell by a single stroke, while host Cornell's A team was third just two shots behind the Bison. Among the other Ivy teams in the field, Dartmouth was fifth, a stroke ahead of Penn's A team, while Brown was 16th (934).
Junior
Mitchell Cornell was Penn's low scorer for the second straight weekend, improving his score every round—including a final-round 69—and finishing the weekend at 1-under-par 212. That had him fifth in a field of 89 golfers. Senior
Eric Ganshaw, playing on Penn's B team, was next on the leaderboard as he beat par in the first round (70), met it in the second round, and finished tied for seventh with a 2-over-par 215 for the weekend. Ganshaw also tied for third among all players in the field with 13 birdies.
Among the A-team players, sophomore
Mark Haghani shot 221 and tied for 29th; freshman
Harrison Ornstein carded 226 and tied for 44th; sophomore
Carter Prince scored in all three rounds and tied for 49th with a 227 score; and freshman
Anthony Basilio had Penn's second-best score on Sunday (1-over-par 72) and tied for 54th with a 228 weekend.
From the B team, sophomore
Jason Langer broke par with a first-round 70, finished fourth among all players with 37 pars, and tied for 36th in the field with a 224 weekend; freshman
Andy Fan tied for 63rd with a score of 230; sophomore
Jason Fan tied for 68th with a 232; and freshman
Jeff Tian, in his collegiate debut, scored in the second round and tied for 86th with a score of 245.
Michael O'Brien of Saint Joseph's took medalist honors, shooting a 6-under-par 207 for the weekend including a final-round 66. Columbia's Daniel Core was second, three shots off O'Brien's pace.
Penn returns to action September 28-29 at Yale's Macdonald Cup.
