QUEENS, N.Y. - The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team put together a formidable threat against 19th-ranked and unbeaten St. John's on the road Friday night, but a goal in the 80th minute from the Red Storm nixed Penn's goal of a result, dropping the Quakers to 2-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The early portion of the match was contained in the midfield, as neither team pushed the attack too heavy to start. The game's first shot came from St. John's, who found some space in the box, but sailed a ball wide at the 15 minute mark.
Penn's first opportunity nearly put the Quakers on top, as
Ben Stitz hammered a ball from outside the 18 that curved in and clanked off the crossbar, saving the Red Storm goalkeeper who was beat on the play. The remaining 20 minutes of the half featured a late shot from Bartel, but otherwise neither team saw another real chance in the stanza. Penn held a slim 51 percent edge in possession after the first 45.
The Red Storm seemed keen on opening the second half with some fireworks in front of their home crowd, but the Penn defense held strong, as the back line stalwarts including
Casey Barone,
RC Williams and
Alex Touche deftly tackled away leading balls when it mattered most. 11 minutes into the second half, Bhangdia found his spot on the left flank and sent a ball in, but a deflection off
Matt Leigh wasn't enough to divert it in the goal, landing wide. Bhangdia would missle another shot that would land just right of the net minutes later.
St. John's was primed to score in the 74th minute after earning a free kick just outside the 18, but Jacomen tipped away the chance at the corner to maintain the draw. The Johnnies earned the game winner in the 80th however, slipping a ball into the box and finishing it to take a 1-0 lead.
Penn would muster a frantic final 10 minutes, including a near equalizer from
Matt Leigh at point blank range forcing a St. John's save, but time ran out on Penn's unblemished start to the season.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers return to Philadelphia for a three-game homestand at Rhodes Field, beginning with a matchup against Rutgers on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
