Series Information
First meeting
The Quakers and Red Storm have never played before in soccer, but Head Coach
Brian Gill is familar with the Johnnies, playing them six times during his tenure at Georgetown, earning a record of 4-2.
Strong Start
You couldn't ask for a better start to the season if you're Penn. With three goals scored, zero goals allowed and a 2-0 record, the Quakers are off to their best start (two wins through two games) since 2014.
Against the Best
Penn is set to play its first ranked opponent in St. John's since a defeat at No. 14 Columbia on Oct. 8, 2017. The Quakers' last win over a ranked foe came against No. 13 Brown in a 1-0 victory on Oct. 30, 2010.
Bhangdia's Boot
Junior
Joey Bhangdia is off to a hot start this fall, scoring a goal in each of Penn's two wins against Monmouth and Marist. Against the Red Foxes, Bhangdia sent in the game winner in the 82nd minute, the third goal of his career.
Stitz Assist
Sophomore
Ben Stitz landed his first career point in Penn's win over Marist, assisting on Bhangdia's game winner.
Two's the Magic Number
The Quakers are 4-0 when scoring at least two goals since
Brian Gill took over as head coach last season. In fact, Penn hasn't lost a game when scoring at least two goals since a 3-2 defeat at Princeton in 2014.
Non-Conference
Penn has lost just one non-conference game in
Brian Gill's tenure as head coach, accumulating a record of 5-1-5 against teams outside of the Ivy League since he took over.
Klutch Kohlbrenner
Jake Kohlbrenner enters his junior season with six career goals, matching
Alex Touche for the team lead of all returning players. A Kohlbrenner goal has been a sure sign of success for the Quakers, as Penn is 5-0-1 when the New York native scores.
Killer Kai
Freshman
Kai Lammers was the only freshman to appear in the starting lineup for Penn in its season opener at Monmouth, and he immediately made his presence felt, netting the first goal of the season in the ninth minute. Lammers is the first freshman to score in a season opener for Penn since
Austin Kuhn scored against Drexel in 2014.
Shutout Streak
Penn has shutout its first two opponents of the year for the first time since 2013. In fact, the Quakers have only allowed three shots on goal in 180 minutes of playing, helping to ease sophomore goalkeeper
Dane Jacomen into the first two starts of his career.
Aye, Aye Captain
Senior
Brandon Bartel and junior
Alex Touche have been tabbed as captains for the Quakers in 2019.
Scouting St. John's
The Red Storm is off to their best start since 2001, going a perfect 4-0 through their first four games of the season, including wins over Appalachian State, NC State, Manhattan and Iona. Picked to finish seventh out of 10 in the preseason BIG EAST poll, the Johnnies have scored nine goals this season with three shutouts. Both Tani Oluwaseyi and Einar Lye have netted two goals with one assist, while preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Skage Simonsen leads the team with two assists on the year. The Red Storm have split time in goal almost evenly between Luka Gavran and Jan Hoffelner, as each had two wins to their name.
