How it Happened

After losing game one in each of their last three Ivy League series', the Quakers looked to get ahead early against Cornell on Saturday.

The Quakers did just that as they surged to a six run first inning.

Sam Pederson led off with a single to get the Red and Blue bats going. Penn took advantage of a Big Red error as Pederson scored and then a single from Cwiertnia brought England across to put the Quakers up, 2-0. Lucy Yang extended the lead with a two-run home run — her fourth of the season. With two outs, Corrie Phillips and Sarah Ketring put two runners on base before a ground-rule double from Kayla Ketring brought both runners home to make it 6-0 after the first frame for Penn.

The Big Red answered in the home half of the first inning. Cornell loaded the bases and then back-to-back singles brought in two runs. A fly-out to Phillips in left field ended the inning with the bases-loaded.

Penn picked up where it left off in the first. A lead-off single — this time from Jessica England — once again got the Quaker bats going. England stole second and then Nedley brought her home with a single to left field. Nedley came across after a single from Phillips loaded the bases. Kayla Ketring earned a walk to bring a run across and make it 9-2 for the Quakers through two innings.

The Red and Blue kept it going in the third. England and Yang put runners on second and third and then it was Nedley who brought home England with a sac-fly to give Penn a 10-2 lead and double-digit runs for a third consecutive game.

Cornell brought the score back within eight in the bottom of the third. The Big Red took advantage of a Penn error to bring in a run and make it 10-3.

Penn scored for the fourth consecutive inning in the fourth. Hannah Gibbons led off with a double to center field. Running for Gibbons, Eliza Demers came in to score on a ground-out to put the lead back at eight, 11-3.

The Big Red answered with four runs of their own in the home-half of the fourth. A two-out single brought one across and then with runners on first and second, Emily McKinney hit a three-run home run to make it 11-7.

Julia Longo took over for Tabitha Dyer in the fourth. The freshman struck out the first batter she faced to retire the side. Longo kept it going in the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts to end the first scoreless inning of the afternoon.

A lead-off double off the wall from Hannah Gibbons put a runner on base with no outs in the sixth. Julia Schneider — who ran for Gibbons — came home after a single from Kayla Ketring to make it 12-7 in the sixth for the Quakers.

Longo added two more strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth to bring her total up to a career-high five strikeouts on the afternoon. A 4-3 groundout in the bottom of the seventh secured the 12-7 win for Penn in game one.

Looking for the Saturday sweep, the Quakers got off to an early lead again in game two. Pederson led off with a single and then was brought home with a single to right field from Cwiertnia. With two runners on, Nedley hit a two-run double to extend the Penn lead to 3-0 in the first.

Jennifer Brann headed the circle in game two for the Quakers. The junior retired the first six batters she faced, including four via strikeout.

Nedley made it 4-0 for the Quakers in the third with her fifth home run of the season. A sac-fly from Kayla Ketring brought in Clare Sebastianelli to make it 6-0 for Penn.

In the fourth, Yang and Nedley each reach base and then nn error in center field loaded the bases for the Red and Blue. Sebastianelli brought in Yang on a sac-fly to give the Quakers a commanding 7-0 lead.

England made it an eight run lead in the fifth. The senior advanced to third base on back-to-back passed balls after she walked for the third time in the game. Yang brought her home on an infield single to make it 8-0.

Brann recorded a swinging strikeout to put two outs on the board in the bottom of the fifth and then an infield pop-up ended game two as the Quakers completed the shutout, 8-0.
