#9 Women's Lacrosse Denies Brown to Remain Atop Ivy League

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - By the slimmest of margins, the ninth-ranked University of Pennsylvania held off Brown, holding the Bears scoreless the final 16:31 of the game, while scoring the contest's last three goals, to remain atop the Ivy League with a 9-8 road victory. The Quakers improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Quakers struggled out of the gates, falling behind 3-0 with turnovers on each of their first three possessions, while conversely Brown was able to capitalize on its opportunities down the field.

Penn's first score came on an extra-woman opportunity, with Rosenzweig feeding Belodeau, and just over a minute later is was Rosenzweig herself, scoring to make it 3-2.

An aggressive play down the heart of the Brown for Michaela McMahon evened the game at 3-3, as the rookie sliced her way straight to goal and finished with authority, leveling things up with 18:02 in the first half.

Penn took its first lead of the afternoon again against an unset defense, as Rosenzweig ricocheted a ball of the post and into the back of the net in transition, putting the Red and Blue on top at 4-3.

Brown would knot the game 4-4, and the final 10 minutes of the half would be dominated by the defenses of each squad, as Brown averted a deficit with blocked and saved shots on Penn scoring opportunities, while Cheeseman stepped up herself for two saves and Penn forced turnovers to enter the break all tied up with the Bears.

It was the Bears to strike first in the second half, netting a free position score nearly four minutes into the period to take a 5-4 lead, but Penn retaliated with two goals in less than 40 seconds to regain the lead, scoring from Erin Barry and Taylyn Stadler.

Turnovers stifled the Red and Blue thereafter though, as the Bears strung together three goals in a row to put Penn in a dangerous position, down 8-6 with 16:31 to play in the game.

With a tricky angle ahead of her, Barry stepped up for a goal on a free position opportunity, before the Quakers knotted the game yet again just over two minutes later on the golden connection between Rosenzweig and Belodeau, as the former fed the latter to even things up 8-8.

Each team had its chances on offense to take the lead, but it was Penn who broke through following a timeout, as Rosenzweig slotted home a sneaky goal with 1:57 left to vault the Quakers ahead 9-8. A foul call on the draw gave Brown the ball next, with the Bears earning two free position opportunities, but Cheeseman stood her ground, denying both shots to secure the victory for Penn.
