How it Happened
The Quakers headed into their final Ivy League series on Saturday looking to make a final push for a shot at the Ivy League Championship Series. In game one it was Columbia that got off to an early jump. A solo home run by Marie Pagane gave the Lions an early, 1-0, lead right out of the gates. Penn answered in the third, taking advantage of a Lion error.
Jessica England reached on a muffed throw and then back-to-back singles from
Sarah Cwiertnia and
Lucy Yang brought her home to tie the score at one run apiece.Â
Jennifer Brann forced a 1-2-3 inning in the third, but Columbia brought two runs across on a dropped fly ball as the Quakers went down 3-1 at the end of the fourth. Penn answered in the fifth, again taking advantage of a Lion error. England scored on the Columbia error and then
Emma Nedley and
Lucy Yang pulled off a double-steal to tie the game at 3-3.Â
A pair of scoreless frames had the two teams headed to the sixth all tied up. However, once again it was Columbia who broke the tie. This time with its second home run of the game. A three-run shot by Amanda Nishihira had the Quakers trailing 6-3 headed into the seventh. Penn rallied late, scoring on sacrifice flies by Yang and Nedley to bring the game within one, but a ground-out ended the game.Â
Penn bounced back in game two with
Julia Longo in the circle. The freshman threw three straight scoreless innings to start the game, retiring nine of her first 11 batters faced. In game two it was the Quakers that broke the scoreless tie. In the top of the fourth, Nedley reached on a fielder's choice to put a runner on and then it was an RBI double from
Hannah Gibbons that brought the freshman home. A two-run shot from
Corrie Phillips gave the Red and Blue a 3-0 lead.Â
Columbia answered with one run in the home half of the fourth and then brought the game within one run at 3-2 in the fifth. Nedley led off the sixth with a single and then it was a
Kayla Ketring single later in the inning that brought Nedley home for a second time in the game to extend the Quaker lead to 4-2. A solo homerun from Pagane in the bottom of the seventh again brought the score back within one, but a ground-out to short stop with
Abigail Abramson in the cirlce ended the game and gave Penn the Saturday split.Â
