Peter Matt has continued as one of Penn's best contact hitters this season. Today, he went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Matt drove in the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two-RBI single. The junior had a solid day in the outfield as well, taking a potential Yale run off the board with a laser throw to home plate, beating out the Bulldogs' baserunner.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Quakers got off to a nice start with three runs in the bottom of the first inning—all with two outs. Malinowski drove in Adams on an RBI single through the left side, then Matt made it 2-0 with a single up the middle to plate
Craig Larsen. Hood rounded out the inning with an RBI single to left field.
Yale pulled within one in the sixth after a pair of sac flies then took the lead in the eighth on a two-run home run over the short porch in left field to make it 4-3. The Quakers regained the lead in the bottom of the frame after Matt drilled a two-RBI single over the Yale first baseman to give Penn a 5-4 lead.
The Bulldogs would strike back in the top of the ninth, however. After two infield errors, Yale drove in a pair of runs on a two-RBI single through the left side to give the visitors a 6-5 lead. Penn's attempted rally fell short in the bottom of the ninth, as an infield pop fly stranded the tying run on second.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Quakers will look to rebound tomorrow as Penn closes out the series against Yale with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one of the twin bill is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
