Baseball Cruises to 17-4 Victory Over Brown

PHILADELPHIA – One day after a 16-inning nail-biter with Brown, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team cruised to a 17-4 win over the Bears. The Quakers continued to dominate offensively with their second-straight game with 20 or more hits after racking up 24 to clinch their first Ivy League series victory of the season.
 
Junior hurler Mitchell Holcomb moved to 4-0 on the season after tossing 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Offensively, six players racked up three or more hits each highlighted by Peter Matt, and Sean Phelan both batting 4-for-5 on the day.

NOTES
*The Quakers racked up 24 hits today, their most this season and most since tallying 27 against La Salle in 2000
 
*With the win, Penn moved to 3-2 in Ivy League play and clinched its first Ivy League series win of the season.
 
*Over the first two games in the series against Brown, Penn racked up 25 runs on 46 hits.
 
*Matt went 4-for-5 on the day and was a triple away from the cycle. He hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the fourth.
 
*Six Penn players tallied three or more hits today: Matt (4-for-5), Phelan (4-for-5), Matt O'Neill (4-for-6), Craig Larsen (3-for-5), Josh Hood (3-for-5), and Andrew Hernandez (3-for-4).
 
*Holcomb made his fifth start of the season today. He threw 5.2 innings and surrendered two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. The junior has the best record among Ivy pitchers at 4-0 on the season.
 
*Larsen extended his hit streak to 14 games after today's game.
 
*Four Penn players have batting averages of .400 or greater after today's game. Hernandez leads the Quakers (.455), followed by Phelan (.414), Larsen (.405), and Kevin Thomas (.400).
 
*Hernandez hit his second collegiate home run today, hitting a three-run bomb to left field in the seventh inning. He drove in a season/career high five RBI today.
 
*Every player of Penn's starting nine tallied an RBI today. Three players had multiple RBI: Hernandez (5), Hood (2), and Matt (2).
 
*Brendan Bean made his first appearance of the season today, pitching the final inning of the game. He did not allow any hits or runs and fanned one batter.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn set the tone early in the game, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Courtney led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt. Phelan drove him in after a double down the right field line.
 
Hood then plated Phelan with an RBI single. O'Neill drove in the third run after an infield single followed by an error by the Brown second baseman. A Hernandez double drove in Hood and O'Neill to make it 5-0. Kyle Cronk capped off the inning with an RBI single to plate Hernandez.
 
Matt continued the scoring for the Quakers with a solo home run in the fourth to make it 7-0. Brown pulled one back in the fifth on an RBI single, but Penn extended its lead in the bottom of the frame.

Courtney hit a sac fly to left to score Hernandez, then Matt doubled down the right field line to plate Cronk and make it 9-1 in favor of the Quakers.
 
A bases-loaded walk scored one for Brown in the sixth, making it 9-2. In the bottom of the frame, Matt McGeagh was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Penn an eight-run lead again.
 
The Quakers continued to stay hot on offense with their second six-run inning of the game, plating six in the bottom of the seventh after five consecutive singles and a home run. Matt and Phelan started the inning with a pair of singles. Larsen scored Matt with an RBI single to left.
 
Phelan came home next as Hood hit an RBI single to left, then O'Neill plated Larsen with another RBI single to left. Hernandez rounded out the scoring with a three-run home run to left to make it 16-2 in favor of the Quakers.
 
Brown cut two back in the eighth with a two-run home run. Penn added its last run of the game in the bottom of the frame after Matt scored from third on a 6-4-3 double play. Bean came in to close out the game and got three-consecutive outs after a leadoff walk to give Penn its third Ivy League win of the season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
The Quakers will go for the series sweep tomorrow as Penn hosts Brown in the series finale at Meiklejohn Stadium starting at 1 p.m.
