How it Happened
After taking game two on Friday, 6-3, to even the series, the Quakers entered game three, looking to take their second consecutive Ivy League series. The Red and Blue took two of three last weekend against Harvard.Â
Penn looked like it would get off to a quick start out of the gates. Sam Pederson led off with a single and then Sarah Cwiertnia hit her seventh double of the season to put two runners in scoring position. Corrie Phillips fought back from 0-2 down in the count to earn a walk and load the bases, but a pop-out left the bases loaded.Â
Dartmouth responded by loading the bases as well in the bottom half of the first. The Big Green brought in a run on a sac-fly and then with two outs, Julia Longo recorded her first strikeout to end the side.Â
The Big Green loaded the bases for a second-straight inning in the second. Again, however, the Penn outfield was able to limit the damage, coming away unscathed. Pederson made a leaping grab and throw to second to get the double play at second and end the inning.Â
A home run from Micah Schroeder added a second run for Dartmouth as the Quakers found themselves down, 2-0, headed to the fourth.Â
Penn loaded the bases for a second time in the fourth inning. Jessica England reached base for a 15th straight game, walking to bring in a run. However, for the second time in the game, Penn left the bases loaded.
Dartmouth answered with four runs of its own as Penn went down, 6-1. Just when it looked like the Big Green might take game three on their home field, the Quakers came storming back.
Lucy Yang led-off the fifth inning with a single and then back-to-back walks from Phillips and Nedley loaded the bases for a third time for the Red and Blue. This time, however, the Quakers took advantage. Julia Schneider doubled to bring in Yang and Pederson and then a home run from Sarah Ketring over the left field wall tied the game at six runs apiece.Â
Still in the fifth, Cwiertnia doubled down the left side to bring in a pair of runs and put Penn up, 8-6 as the Quakers made it through the entire order in the inning. The Quakers took advantage of the Big Green's first error of the afternoon to bring in two more runs, making it a nine run inning for the Red and Blue. Finally, a fly out from Schneider ended the scoring surge with Penn up 10-6.Â
After two quick outs with Abigail Abramson in the circle, the sophomore loaded the bases. A Schroeder double for Dartmouth brought in two runs to make it 10-8 for the Quakers. Taking over for Abramson, Jennifer Brann forced a pop-out to get the final out and send Penn into the sixth with a two-run lead.Â
Back-to-back walks from Kayla Ketring and Pederson put runners on first and second to begin the sixth and then a single from England brought one across to extend the Penn lead. Cwiertnia followed it up with a double to deep center field to clear the bases and put the Red and Blue up five, 13-8.Â
Yang brought home Cwiertnia and then Nedley made it five runs for a second straight inning as she brought Yang across to give Penn a 15-8 lead.Â
A quick inning for Penn outfield had the Quakers up seven headed to the seventh inning. Three straight walks loaded the bases again for the Red and Blue. Jessica England drove in her third and fourth RBI of the afternoon for a 17-8 lead.Â
The Big Green took advantage of two Penn errors in the final frame to score two runs, but after a quick meeting in the circle, Brann got the batter swinging to secure the series win.Â
