Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Goldner's Late Goal Earns Big Win For Men's Lax At No.8 Cornell

ITHACA – From 0-3 to 4-3.

No. 19 Penn ventured north to Ithaca and stunned No. 8 Cornell, 16-15, to improve to 2-0 in the Ivy League.

Adam Goldner was the hero, netting the game-winning goal with 17.9 seconds remaining after a staunch defensive stand from the Red and Blue at the other end.

The Quakers trailed, 7-2, in the second quarter but patiently worked their way back into the game as Tyler Dunn led the way with five goals. Penn still faced a 13-10 deficit with 11:25 to play, but scored the next four to take its first lead with 4:42 to play. The two teams combined for six goals in the final 5:04, but four of those came off Penn sticks as the Quakers toppled a Top-10 opponent.
Notes To Know…
  • Penn is now 2-3 against Top-25 opponents this season, adding this win to a win over then-No. 11 Villanova. All three of Penn's losses in 2019 have come to Top-5 opponents.
  • Tyler Dunn tied his career high with five goals, and set his career high with six points. Dunn added five ground balls, giving him 15 over the last three games.
  • Goldner finished with four goals and give points. He has scored 2+ goals in all seven games this season, and has five points in each of his last three games.
  • Sam Handley had three goals and five points. He has tallied 24 points over his last five games.
  • Kyle Gallagher was 20-for-32 on faceoffs, his third game this season with 20+ wins.
  • Penn's four-game winning streak is its longest since winning eight in a row in 2014.

How It Happened…
The Big Red jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the first quarter, led by two goals from John Piatelli – including one on an extra-man chance. Tyler Dunn would end that run, taking a defender 1v1 and driving to goal for a diving score after Matt McIlwrick had picked off a Cornell pass and cleared successfully.

Jeff Teat would close the first quarter with his second of the game with 2:52 left, giving Cornell a 5-2 lead after one period. The Quakers had two good looks before the end of the quarter, but a shot from Adam Goldner was saved and Dunn was just off target as time expired.

The Big Red would extend their lead to 6-2 at the start of the second quarter as Clarke Petterson scored 1:35 into the period. He had to reach back for an entry pass, but he would spin around and score top corner. Just over 2:00 later, the Big Red took a 7-2 lead following a goal from Jake McCulloch.

Dunn would again stop a Cornell run, scoring on the extra-man 5:16 into the second quarter. He was all alone at the far post, and Dylan Gergar found him with a nice pass to set up the score. That goal started a 3-0 run for the Quakers over a span of 0:36 – each an EMO goal. Adam Goldner would get the next one, also finishing a Gergar pass. Just 0:08 later, Dunn completed his hat trick with a goal from distance to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Big Red would net one with 6:05 remaining, but the Quakers would counter with 1:56 left in the half, Goldner finishing a Handley pass for his second of the game.

Jake McCulloch opened the scoring in the second half, picking up a rebound at the goalmouth and giving Cornell a 9-6 lead 2:41 into the third quarter. Handley would answer with a rocket from the top left side with 9:40 remaining in the third quarter.

The Quakers did everything could to get the next goal, but point-bank shots by Handley and Dunn were denied by Chayse Ierlan. The Big Red would transition downfield, and Connor Fletcher extended the Big Red lead to 10-7 with 4:24 left in the third quarter.

The Penn captains would counter, bringing Penn back within two at 11-9 after three quarters. First, Simon Mathias scored on a diving ground ball shot from space, finishing a nice outlet pass from Dunn. Less than 0:30 later, Dunn called his own number for an unassisted goal.

Penn had an EMO that overlapped the third and fourth quarter, but could not score. Cornell would then force a turnover by Reed Junkin on a clear, and Teat was able to loop a 35-yard shot into an open net for a 12-9 Big Red lead just 1:05 into the final frame. The Red and Blue answered quickly, Handley sliding a pass from the left wing to Goldner who fired home from center 1:32 later.

After Cornell had taken a 13-10 lead, Penn rattled off two goals in 0:09 to close within one. The first came on a two-man EMO, Dylan Gergar found himself wide open at the cage following a scramble in front, and he deposited his fifth of the season. On the ensuing faceoff, Kyle Gallagher won the draw then stormed to goal to score his first of the season.

Dunn would net the tying goal with 5:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. Roesner worked the left side, then dished a pass across the defense to Dunn at the right wing. He would rear back and fire home his fifth of the game to level the game at 13-13.

Penn would take its first lead of the game off a San Handley goal with 4:42 to play. Cornell would win the next draw and go down to tie the game again, 14-14, on a Piatelli goal following a crease roll.

Handley would then retake the lead for Penn with his third of the game. Ierlan made a point-blank save on Mathias, but the rebound scooted out to Handley who scooped and scored with 3:28 to play.

Cornell again called upon Piatelli and he answered to tie the game 15-15, with 2:02 to play.

The Big Red won the next face-off, but Mark Evanchick came up with a strip of Jeff Teat, sending Penn down field in transition. The Quakers would call time out, and drew up a play which saw Alex Roesner work behind the net, stop and dish back the way he came to Goldner who was wide open at the cage to slide in the eventual game-winner with 17.9 seconds remaining. Penn had to sweat it out a bit after Cornell won the next draw, but the Big Red tossed the ball away and Penn would run out the final three seconds for the win.
