HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn got its offense going early and opened the scoring in the second inning. Hood reached base on a single to left field, and Hernandez took a pitch to the back. An error by the Winthrop first baseman allowed Hood to round third and score.
Winthrop responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single to center.
Penn regained the lead in the third. Phelan got things going with a leadoff single.
Matt O'Neill brought his fellow captain around the bases with a double deep into center field. Larsen then extended Penn's lead with his first collegiate home run—a two run shot far over the left field wall.
The Quakers' bats kept it going in the fourth. O'Neill reached base on a walk and was plated after Larsen doubled down the left field line. On the following at bat, Hood doubled to right center bringing Larsen around third to score.
Holcomb retired the Eagles' side in the bottom of the frame and Penn's bats stayed hot in the fifth. Courtney led the Quakers off with a single and Matt reached first on a bunt, with the Winthrop third baseman unable to make the throw.
Malinowski singled into left field, plating Courtney, and Phelan cleaned the bases with a two RBI double to center field.
O'Neill walked and McGeagh singled to load the bases. Larsen hit into a fielder's choice, but Hood singled to right and plated McGeagh and O'Neill. Hernandez capped off the six-run inning for Penn with a foul out to the right fielder, allowing Larsen to tag and score.
Penn allowed Winthrop to score four in the bottom of the eighth after five consecutive scoreless innings.
The Quakers added one more insurance run in the ninth. Larsen got it started with a double to right center and advanced to third after a Hood single. Thomas got his first career RBI with a single to left field, allowing Larsen to score.
Cerulle shut down Winthrop in the bottom of the frame, forcing a 5-4-3 double play and a ground out to second.
