Notes To Know…
- Penn will be looking to end Cornell's 86-match Ivy League winning streak on Friday. The last Ivy team to knock off the Big Red in a dual meet? Penn in 2002.
- In his last 13 meetings with Cornell as head coach, Roger Reina is 6-6-1.
- The Quakers are 2-0 to open the Ivy League season for the first time since 2010-11. The Red and Blue were 3-0 to open that conference slate before a loss to No. 1 Cornell in Ithaca.
- Freshman Carmen Ferrante is 18-5 overall this season at 125 pounds for the Quakers. In dual meets, he is 8-0 and has earned 32 team points. In the previous four seasons in contested matches at 125 pounds, the Quakers had won just six dual meet matches at 125 pounds (6-37) and scored only 25 team points at that weight (were outscored 122-25).
- Ferrante leads the team in major decisions with seven. His six-match winning streak entering the weekend leads the team.
- Freshman Anthony Artalona is 17-3 overall this season, leading the team in pins (4) and EIWA wins (8).
- Artalona has won five matches in a row – three coming with bonus points.
- Freshman Doug Zapf is 8-11 overall this season at 133 pounds. Outside of major decision losses to nationally-ranked Austin DeSanto (Iowa) and Josiah Kline (Arizona State), Zapf's nine other losses have been decision defeats by a combined 20 points (2.2 point margin of defeat).
- Penn will send out a completely different lineup than the one which competed in last year's dual with Cornell. The Big Red are expected to have four returners from last year's dual, including returning national champion at 141 pounds No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis and All-American at 184 pounds No. 12 Max Dean. Last year, the Big Red stormed out to a 22-0 lead on their way to a 32-9 win in The Palestra.
- The Quakers defeated Columbia, 21-18, last year in Philly. Each side won five bouts, but four of Penn's wins came with bonus points. Only Joe Oliva is expected to return for the Quakers this year, and he will be up a weight at 157 this go-round. Only Laurence Kosoy returns for the Lions, he suffered a 14-5 major decision loss to May Bethea last year.
- Last weekend, Penn had seven true freshmen and nine total first-year starters in the lineup in a 35-6 win over Harvard in The Palestra. The freshmen went 5-2, adding bonus points in four of those wins.
