PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team (4-1) remained undefeated at home on Saturday, sweeping NJIT, 7-0. The Quakers improved to 4-0 on home courts this season where they have also lost just three matches total.
How it Happened
The Quakers have played some of their best tennis at home over the past two seasons and that continued Saturday afternoon against the Highlanders. Penn got off to a fast start, taking all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
Kyle Mautner and
Dmitry Shatalin won 6-3 at number one, while the new pairing of
Robert Smithline and
Kevin Zhu earned a 6-2 victory at number two doubles.
Max Cancilla and
Aleks Huryn got a late break of serve to win 7-5, sweeping all three doubles.
Penn took its momentum from doubles into singles where all but one match ended in straight sets.
Noah Makarome lost a tiebreak in the first set, but bounced back to take the second, 6-1. The sophomore then won a super-tiebreak, 10-3, to earn the victory.
Mautner and Zhu each earned 6-1, 6-1 wins at one and two singles. Shatalin lost just three games on his way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. At six singles,
Aleks Huryn came out firing, winning the first set 6-0. He then managed to tough out a close second set 7-5 to win in straight sets.
