All-Time Series
Penn will be looking for its first-ever win in the all-time series with Maryland, the Terps have claimed all 15 previous meetings dating back to 1924. Last season, Maryland recorded a 13-6 win in College Park. A win this weekend would end Penn's 0-6 skid versus Maryland at Franklin Field.
Season's Greetings
Heading into his tenth season as head coach at Penn,
Mike Murphy has had success over his nine previous season openers. Murphy's teams are 6-3 to open a season since 2010, including wins in each of the last four years.
Trio Of All-Ivy Players Return
The Quakers return three All-Ivy selections from 2018, led first-team All-Ivy defender
Mark Evanchick. He is joined by senior attackman
Simon Mathias (second-team All-Ivy) and senior midfielder
Tyler Dunn (honorable mention All-Ivy) as returning all-league selections.
Back For More
Seven of Penn's starters from last season return, including six who started 10+ games. Senior goalkeeper
Reed Junkin has made 42 career starts in goal, while Mathias has 42 career starts on attack. Overall, 20 players who played in at least half of Penn's 15 games last season return for 2019.
Simon Says…
Few have been more reliable over a playing career than
Simon Mathias. In 43 career games played, Mathias has 84 goals and 51 assists for 135 points – an average of 3.1 points-per-game. He ranks second among active Division I players with a 43-game point streak and ranks third among active players with a 20-game goal scoring streak. His 84 career goals rank No. 9 all-time at Penn – one away from No. 8 and two from No. 7 – and his 135 career points rank No. 11 entering his senior season.
Relying On Reed
Senior
Reed Junking has played in 43 career games in goal, manning the cage for over 2,533 minutes. The 2016 second-team All-Ivy selection and Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year alongside teammate
Simon Mathias, Junkin has earned three career Ivy League Player of the Week honors. He enters his senior season with a .507 save percentage.
On The Mark
Junior defender
Mark Evanchick has developed into one of the Ivy League's premier defenders. After appearing in just three games as a freshman, Evanchick started all 15 games at close defense last season and often drew the assignment of the opposing team's top offensive threat. He finished with eight caused turnover and 19 ground balls last season.
Man-Up Moves
Penn was 12-for-29 on the man-up in 2018, with
Adam Goldner accounting for half of Penn's EMO goals. Penn's .414 percentage on the man-up was No. 17 in the country last season.
Maryland Musings
The Terps are off to a 2-0 start to 2019, picking up wins over Bucknell (11-6) and Richmond (10-9) … The Terps have played in five consecutive NCAA Championship Weekends, winning it all in 2017 … Junior attackman Jared Bernhardt was a third-team All-American last season, while senior defender Curtis Corley is a returning honorable mention All-American … Berhnardt leads the team with seven goals this season and is tied with Logan Wisnauskas for the team lead with eight points … Austin Henningsen is 20-for-25 on faceoffs, the team is 33-for-44 … Danny Dolan is 2-0 in goal with a 7.50 GAA and .595 save percentage.
