ANAHEIM, Calif. – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team finished the Wooden Legacy with a 2-1 record and a third-place finish as the Quakers knocked off Long Beach State, 95-79, on Sunday at the Anaheim Arena.

With the win, Penn—which defeated UCF on Thanksgiving Day before falling to No. 14 Arizona on Friday—improved to 5-3 overall with Big 5 rival Villanova coming up on Wednesday night out on the Main Line. The Beach fell to 3-6 overall.

Senior forward AJ Brodeur was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Dylan Smith (Arizona), Chase Jeter (Arizona) and Olivier Sarr (Wake Forest). Arizona's Nico Mannion was named Tournament MVP and also earned an All-Tournament spot.

How It Happened
Penn's first eight field goals came from eight different players as the Quakers moved the ball all over the floor. The formula was a success as Penn's lead was 20-11 after Bryce Washington finished a feed from Devon Goodman underneath. At that point, LBSU's Chance Hunter hit a pair of three-point shots which was the start of a 10-2 Beach run that woke up the 49ers, specifically Hunter and Colin Slater. The duo combined for 28 of Long Beach's next 32 points as the teams went back and forth en route to a 43-43 tie at halftime.

Penn came out hot in the second half. Jordan Dingle knocked down a trey, AJ Brodeur found Goodman underneath, and then a block led to a breakout layup for Dingle. Just like that it was 50-43, and Long Beach called timeout. That temporarily settled the 49ers, who scored the first four points after the stoppage, but the senior captains Goodman, Brodeur and Ryan Betley combined for nine of the game's next 11 points, Goodman's triple pushing the Quakers in front by double digits, 59-49. Jordan Roberts briefly got The Beach back within single digits, but Dingle hit a trey and then Lucas Monroe scored in the paint and the lead was 64-51.

LBSU got the lead down to 10 just one more time, when Jordan Griffin hit a three and then Michael Carter III scored in the paint to make the score 74-64 with 7:05 left. That forced a timeout from Penn coach Steve Donahue, and out of the break Brodeur found Betley for a corner three. That set Penn off on a 9-0 run, Max Martz punctuating it with his fifth three-pointer of the game to make it 83-64 with 5:26 left.

The Beach had nothing left. Penn's lead grew as large as 21 just a minute later, and the closest the 49ers got was 13 points in the final seconds before Alex Imegwu closed the scoring with Penn's 15th trey of the day.
