Volleyball Triumphs on Senior Day, Defeats Dartmouth 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team (11-10, 4-8) wrapped up their home schedule with a 3-1 win on Senior Day over Dartmouth (7-15, 2-10). The team honored seniors Caroline Raquel and Madison Goldstein, who played their final home game at The Palestra.

Riding a wave of emotion and energy from a raucous crowd, the Quakers came out swinging, getting huge production from both of their seniors. Raquel tallied six digs and a block, while Goldstein recorded four kills, a .571 hitting percentage and three digs. In a bit of serendipity, Goldstein sealed the first set with a massive kill on a setup from Kacie Burton to take the set 25-17.

The Big Green were able to respond in the second set, raising their team hitting percentage almost .150. Eight team blocks by Dartmouth allowed them to jump ahead and they overcame a late run by the Quakers to take the second set 25-19.

Initially it had appeared that the Big Green had swung all the momentum in their favor, as they jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the third. However, the Red and Blue recaptured that same momentum that jolted them in the first set, thanks to two kills by Autumn Leak in response. The Quakers evened the score late at 19-19 and won four of the final five points to take the third set 25-22.

Dartmouth responded once again with a 14-7 lead, but the Quakers were up to the task in this set. Leak and Raven Sulaimon took over, with Sulaimon recording six of her 10 kills in the set. An 18-9 finish was what it took to complete a terrific comeback, winning 25-23 and recording the Quakers second straight win.

In their final home game at The Palestra, Goldstein tallied a season-high nine kills, 15 digs and five assists, while Raquel notched 11 digs, two service aces a block. Leak also continued her terrific homestand, recording a game-high 15 kills, three digs and three blocks in the victory.

Penn will wrap up their season with a weekend road trip in New England. The Quakers will face Yale at 7 p.m. on Friday night and Brown on Saturday night at 5 p.m.
