PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Princeton at Rhodes Field on Saturday.
The Tigers scored with just 31 seconds remaining in the first half to bury the game's only goal as Penn suffered its third consecutive heartbreaking defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Through the first 15 minutes, the game opened up nicely from a neutral point of view with both Penn and Princeton creating real scoring opportunities. For Penn, Emma Loving was the most dangerous to the Tiger back four, taking two shots from her spot down the right wing.
The three early chances for each team in the first 15 minutes accounted for virtually all of the qualify opportunities in the first half. After the first surge of intensity settled, both teams began to feel each other out.
The game seemed destined to enter half deadlocked at 0-0, but Princeton, however, found a goal in the final minute to snatch the lead. The goal came with just 31 seconds remaining in the half.
Penn raised the intensity in the second half and, around the hour mark, put a big-time chance on frame. Emily Sands turned her defender about 25 yards out and unleashed a strike headed toward the top bins. The shot forced a difficult save as Natalie Grossi tipped it over the bar.
Then, on the ensuing corner, Megan Lloyd got her head to it, but it rippled the outside netting.
In the 77th minute, Princeton almost doubled its lead when a shot rattled the woodwork and then Kitty Qu came up with a massive save on the rebound to keep Penn within arm's length.
Just two minutes later, the Quakers put their best foot forward. Loving hit a ball to Sizzy Lawton in the middle of the field. Lawton one touched a pass in behind the back four, forcing Grossi into action, but she couldn't deal with it. Ella Wright tried poking one past her, but she was up to the task, then Wright retrieved the rebound and played Lawton for a shot, but Grossi again dove to her right to make the stop. That served as Penn's best chance down the stretch, falling again to Princeton 1-0.
