Artalona Takes Second, Four Quakers Place at Michigan State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The 2019-20 Penn Wrestling Season opened with four podium finishes at the Michigan State Open, led by No. 8 Anthony Artalona who was runner-up at 157 pounds.

Artalona, who won the 149-pound title at the MSU Open last year to begin his stellar freshman season, faired well in his debut up a weight to open his sophomore campaign. He went 4-1 in the tournament, his wins highlighted by a 3-2 win over Oklahoma's No. 13 Justin Thomas in the semifinals. In the final, Artalona got caught in a six-point move early in the third period against Purdue's Kendall Coleman and fell, 10-7.

Freshman Michael Colaiocco was fourth at 125 pounds, posting a 4-2 record in his collegiate debut. Colaiocco had two technical fall wins and recorded bonus points in three of his four victories. His day was highlighted by a 5-4 win over No. 12 Devin Schroder of Purdue in the quarterfinals, though Schroeder would get a win back with a 4-3 decision in the third-place bout.

In the Freshman/Sophomore division, two Quakers recorded impressive debuts. Rookie Cam Connor went 4-0 with a pin and major decision to win the crown at 157 pounds. At 184 pounds, freshman Jesse Quatse was runner up in his first competition in a Penn singlet.
