ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team (9-10, 2-8) suffered a 3-0 loss against the Cornell Big Red (15-4, 8-2) on Saturday night.
Cornell controlled the first set quickly, taking the lead permanently after a 2-2 tie to open the game. The Quakers did get two kills from four different players, but the Big Red powered ahead with a 6-0 run in the middle of the first to run away with it 25-14.
The Quakers came out of the gate in the second set with tremendous energy, with
Daniela Fornaciari and
Parker Jones leading the way with some early kills and an ace. However, the Big Red got on another run to pull away, taking the second set 25-16.
The third set proved to be the closest of the match, with the Big Red taking it 25-17.
Margaret Planek and
Daia Ernst each recorded two kills, bringing their individual match totals to four. The Quakers did manage to save two set points as well, but the kill by Cornell's Jada Stackhouse finished off the third set in favor of the Big Red.
On the back end, the Quakers received strong defensive play from not only
Carmina Raquel, who tallied 13 digs, but also
Kylie Kulinski and
Kacie Burton, who recorded seven digs of their own, helping the Red and Blue record 39 in the match.
Penn returns home next weekend for their final two games at The Palestra this season. The Quakers will host Harvard on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Dartmouth on Saturday at 5 p.m. as we celebrate Senior Night.
