PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's squash team came roaring back from a 4-2 deficit, to win 5-4 over #7 Drexel. The win secured the Quakers third-straight Pennsylvania State Championship title.
The Drexel women entered the match as one of the best teams in the nation, but the Quakers proved up to the task. After an early 1-0 deficit,
Haley Scott and
Navmi Sharma roared back from early deficits to secure two wins.
Those two comebacks proved to be the catalyst for an even bigger comeback, as Drexel took the next three matchups, leaving the Quakers in a do-or-die situation, needing all three wins to comeback. Freshman
Amina Abou El Enin remained composed, calmly moving through her opponent 3-0. Captain
Julia Buchholz built an early lead, but had to dig deep, as her opponent forced a fifth game. Buchholz was able to rally and win 3-2, setting the tone for the final matchup.
Freshman
Ashley Manning faced immense pressure, with the entire result on her shoulders. Adding to the pressure was a 2-1 deficit and a crowd focused exclusively on her match. However, the freshman rose to the occasion, winning a tight fourth 11-9 and cruising in the fifth 11-5.
