First-Half Goals Propel Men's Soccer Past Harvard, 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team scored twice in the first half—once early, once late—and that was enough to propel the Quakers to a 2-0 win at Harvard on Saturday evening.

With the win, Penn finishes the season with a 7-5-4 overall record. More importantly, results in Providence (Brown 2, Dartmouth 1) and Princeton (Yale 2, Princeton 1) allowed the Quakers to finish the season alone in second place in the Ivy League standings at 3-1-3, behind only Yale (6-1-0, the loss coming to Penn).

It looked like Harvard was on the board less than a minute into Saturday's match on the turf of Jordan Field, but the referee quickly ruled offsides and the match remained scoreless. That held until the 13th minute, when Penn was awarded a free kick deep in Harvard territory. Brandon Bartel beautifully curled a ball to the far post, where Kai Lammers took it off the turf and nodded a header inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.

Just ahead of the halftime whistle, the Quakers used the counter-attack to double their lead. From deep in its defensive end, Penn cleared the ball past midfield, where Matt Leigh collected it and fed Anthony Rovito as he raced toward goal along the right side. The sophomore took a touch, then rocketed a shot past the Harvard goalkeeper's right and into the net for his first collegiate goal.

The second half was a professional effort by the Quakers, who were content to let Harvard control much of the play without getting into danger. Dane Jacomen was called on for three saves on the day, the best one coming late in the match on a free kick from about 30 yards in front of the goal as he moved to his right to snare a rocket shot.

The shutout was Penn's second in a row, the fourth in the final five matches, and the seventh overall which is the second season in a row that has happened.
