PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Columbia Lions on Saturday night as they continued their Ivy League season.
The Lions came out of the gate firing, taking a 20-11 lead in the first set against the Quakers. However, the Red and Blue showed tremendous fight, pushing back with six straight points to cut the deficit to five. Ultimately, Columbia was able to hold on to secure the first set 25-20.
In the second set, the Quakers went toe-to-toe with the Lions, tying them seven times, including at 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21.
Parker Jones proved to be a catalyst for the Quakers attack, notching six kills and bringing her match total to 10. However, the Lions delivered the final blow, winning four straight points and taking the second set 25-21.
The Quakers had an answer for the Lions in the third set, showing an improved net-front presence. Penn tallied five blocks in the third set and spread the offense, with five players recording at least two points. In a back-and-forth battle, the Quakers were able to outlast a potent Lions attack and take the third set 25-22.
The fourth set proved to be the tensest for both sides, with seven lead changes and 17 ties throughout the set.
Kacie Burton continued her strong play throughout the day, tallying 10 more assists to reach 34 on the day and
Daniela Fornaciari picked her up with four kills and an efficient .667 hitting percentage. Nevertheless, the Lions delivered just enough to edge the Quakers 25-23 and take the match.
Penn continues Ivy League play on Friday, October 11 as they welcome in Brown University to The Palestra for the first time this year at 7 p.m.
