HOW IT HAPPENED
Play began at a torrid pace with both teams fully aware of the gravity of the match. Penn's first shot of the night came off a corner kick opportunity in the sixth minute, directed wide of goal by
Alex Touche.
Much of the play in the first half was contested between the 18s, with neither team spending much time in its attacking third.
The Quakers averted danger in the latter parts of the half, as Yale hammered a ball just inches left of the post, but the two entered the break scoreless.
Penn asserted itself on the front foot in the second half, slowly tilting the field in favor of the home team.
Touche again made contact in the box off a cross in the 52nd, sending another chance high of goal. The Quakers did well to maintain possession but were unable to generate many chances at the goal mouth, instead getting called offsides just when play seemed to develop.
Yale would retaliate with some momentum of its own in the late stages of regulation, getting a good look at the onion bag with a free kick opportunity in the 76
th minute, but Mark Winhoffer sailed it high, as Penn averted danger yet again. The Bulldogs would sniff three more shot opportunities before the 90-minute mark, each landing wide of goal.
Jacomen flashed his skill late in the first overtime period for Penn, going full stretch to the left to prevent a Yale winner and send the game into double overtime. There,
Jake Kohlbrenner collected a ball at the top of the box from
Joey Bhangdia and was tripped up by a Yale defender, earning the spot kick. Bartel calmly took the ball and drilled it straight to the back of the net to deliver the win for Penn.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers hit the road next weekend in Ivy League play, visiting Brown on Saturday, Nov. 2.
