HOW IT HAPPENED
The first shot of the night came from the foot of Leigh, who was assertive in his first career start for the Red and Blue. After both teams felt each other out in the opening portions of the match, Leigh sent in a ball to the right of the goal mouth, forcing a save from the Retriever keeper.
While UMBC held a bulk of possession, Penn was opportunisitic in its chance, again getting a good look at a goal in the 22nd minute as
Ben Stitz fed a well positioned Leigh angling toward the box who got room from his defender but sailed a shot just left of the post.
Penn's best chance of the night came on a set piece opportunity with
Brandon Bartel setting up shop just inside midfield in the 31st minute, flying a ball high and connecting with the head of Stitz who targeted it on goal forcing a miraculous save from UMBC's netminder.
Christoffersen would have a monumental save of his own, saving a UMBC shot in the 34th minute to preserve the draw heading into half.
Neither team would get off a shot until the deciding goal from the Retrievers in the 58th minute, as UMBC took the lead on a rip from outside the penalty box. In fact, that was the only shot the entire second half from either team, as Penn would seek the equalizer but was unable to string together enough looks to lead to any serious threats.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers will resume Ivy League play this weekend, hosting Dartmouth on Rhodes Field at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.
