HOW IT HAPPENED
It didn't take the Quakers long to create its first chance as Sara Readinger inched away from her defender and unleashed a shot in the first minute of the game. But, through the first 15 minutes, neither squad could really formulate a clear-cut scoring opportunity.
In the 23rd minute, Columbia created its best chance of the early going with a big ball in behind Penn's back four. Kitty Qu was quick off her line, though, and did enough to dispel the danger.
Around the 25th minute, Penn began to gain more of a foothold in the affair. Readinger and Breukelen Woodard began to clog up the Lions' attack and then started to find more space while in possession. The insertion of Sizzy Lawton also changed the dynamic of the Quakers in the final third. For a solid stretch past the midway point of the first half, Penn began to hold more of the ball and did so in better areas.
Both teams settled for a scoreless first half, entering the break deadlocked at 0-0.
The first golden chance of the second half came in the 51st minute and it went to the Lions. Against the run of play, Columbia hit a ball to the back post, Jordyn Geller just beat Qu to the ball, but her shot sailed high. Just less than five minutes later, Qu was forced into action on Geller, but comfortably made a save to her left.
In the 78th minute, Columbia got its goal. A long free kick was thumped into the box, it bounced in no-man's land and then Gracie Wall headed it home.
Needing a goal, Penn turned up the heat. In the 83rd minute, Lawton found Paige Howard, who whipped in a left footed cross to Ella Wright. The freshman's shot found the keeper's arms, though. Just two minutes later, a long ball from Breukelen Woodard was flicked on by Emily Sands in the path of Lawton, who was tackled from behind as she neared the keeper. No foul was called, though, and play continued with Columbia up 1-0.
The Lions managed the close out the final few minutes to win 1-0.
