PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League and Philadelphia Big 5 have announced their weekly award winners in men's basketball, and University of Pennsylvania freshman guard
Bryce Washington was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week as well as Big 5 Player of the Week. This marks the second time Washington has earned the Ivy honor this month, as he also was named Rookie of the Week for January 7. It is Washington's first Big 5 award.
Washington's honors come on the heels of his performance in Saturday's 78-70 win over Saint Joseph's. The freshman guard led Penn in scoring and rebounds, with 23 and 10, collecting his first collegiate double-double in the process. He set season/career highs in points, rebounds, assists (4) and three-point baskets (6) as the Quakers completed a sweep of the Big 5 series this year for the first time since 2001-02 and won the Big 5 title in the four-game round-robin format for just the second time since 1980-81.
Penn is 12-6 overall, 0-2 in Ivy League play, and will have nothing but Ancient Eight games the rest of the way. The first two conference weekends will take place on the road, starting this Friday when the Quakers are at Cornell in a game that will tip off at 5 p.m. and air nationally on ESPNU. On Saturday, the Red and Blue are in New York City to take on Columbia in a game that is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Both games are parts of doubleheaders with the Penn women: Friday's games will be men first, women second while Saturday's order is women's game then men's game.
