Wrestling Falls At Binghamton, 25-12

VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team was defeated by Binghamton, 25-12, in an EIWA dual meet in Binghamton, the Bearcats winning the final four bouts to rally past the Quakers.

A pin from No. 14 Anthony Artalona at 149 pounds gave the Quakers a 12-9 lead through six bouts, but Binghamton rallied with two close victories before adding bonus points in the final two bouts to seal the win.

Senior Patrik Garren picked up a 13-7 win at 197 pounds to open the dual. He was joined by Artalona and fellow freshman Carmen Ferrante as winners for the Quakers.

Garren scored two takedowns in the first period against Alex Melikian, and built a 9-2 lead after two periods. He would add another takedown in the third period on his way to a 13-7 win.

Neither team held more than a three point lead until eight bouts had passed. There were three ties in the meet and a pair of lead changes. Binghamton countered Garren's win with a 5-2 decision from Joe Doyle over Ben Goldin at 285. Goldin scored first, but a full ride in the second period from Doyle changed the course of the match. He would then escaped and add a quick takedown in the third for the win.

Carmen Ferrante regained the lead for Penn with a 5-1 decision over Audey Ashkar at 125 pounds. After a scoreless first period, it was Ferrante's turn to dial up a full ride in the second period. He stuffed every one of Ashkar's attempts to wear him down. In the third, Ferrante escaped quickly then picked an ankle for a 3-0 lead. He would add a point for stalling by Ashkar and the riding time point for his team-leading 15th win.

At 133 pounds, Doug Zapf was one point short to a fellow PIAA state champion in Zack Trampe, 4-3. Zapf trailed, 4-0 after two periods but gave his best to come back. He was able to score a late takedown, but ran out of time looking for a turn.

Grant Aronoff spotted Anthony Sparacio the first two takedowns at 141, and was unable to counter in a 9-6 loss. The two wrestlers traded reversals in the second period, but Sparacio was able to escape late. In the third, Aronoff scored a second reversal to cut the deficit to 7-6, but Sparacio's riding time forced Aronoff to go for nearfall which never came.

Artalona gave Penn a 12-9 lead with a dominant pin over NCAA qualifier and EIWA runner-up Frankie Garcia. Artalona scored a quick takedown and added four nearfall in the first before taking Garcia to his back via cradle in the second for the pin at 4:15.

That was the final win for Penn as Binghamton ran off four straight. At 157, Dylan Wood scored takedowns early in the first and second periods to build a 4-2 lead. Jake Lizak, in his first bout of the season, was close on a takedown in the final 30 seconds of the second period but couldn't finish. In the third, Wood reversed to open the period before Lizak countered with a reversal of his own with 0:45 remaining. With riding time secure for Wood, Lizak went to work on top but ran out of time in a 7-5 final.

At 165 pounds, Evan DeLuise scored quickly to open his bout against Aidan Monteverdi, but was reversed in short order for a tie match. DeLuise was in deep on a leg toward the end of the period, but Monteverdi stretched away from the single leg to keep DeLuise's lead at 3-2. In the second, DeLuise escaped midway through the period and was able to finish a late-period single for a 6-2 lead after two. Monteverdi rallied in the final period, scoring a takedown late to tie the match, 7-7, with riding time. DeLuise battled out, escaping in the final 10 seconds to force overtime. In the extra period, Monteverdi circled in a scramble for the winning score 20 seconds in.

The final two bouts were bonus-point wins for the Bearcats from Vincent and Louis DePrez. At 174, Vincent downed Jake Hendricks, 9-1, with a takedown in each period. His younger brother, Louis, followed with a 15-0 tech fall at 184 over Jalen Laughlin. Ranked No. 8 in the country, Louis DePrez held a 5-0 lead after one period and followed with a takedown and two sets of four-point nearfall in the second.

Penn is back in The Palestra on Sunday, hosting Army West Point at 4 p.m.
