NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The last time the University of Pennsylvania men's squash team won at Yale head coach Gilly Lane C'07 was on the team. However, Lane was a senior in the process of completing one of the great Penn men's squash careers rather than the coach. The Quakers defeated the Bulldogs 6-3 back in 2006 and hadn't won in New Haven since.
The Red and Blue ended that on Saturday.
Behind three stellar freshmen, an All-American at number one, and solid depth, the Quakers defeated No. 7 Yale 7-2 for their fourth top-10 win of the season.
How it Happened
Team captain,
Jonathan Zeitels,
Michael Mehl, and
Andrew Douglas put the Quakers up 3-0 after the first shift. Mehl split the opening two games before taking the final two, including at 11-2 win in the fourth to win, 3-1. Douglas began the Ivy season with a clean sweep at the top spot, while Zeitels closed his match in the fourth, 14-12.
As they have all season, it was the freshmen that came up big for Penn. In the second shift,
James Flynn and
Aly Abou Eleinen each won 3-0 to put the Red and Blue up 5-0 and clinch the match.
Karim Hussein and
Yash Bhargava earned wins at six and seven to give Penn its sixth and seventh points. Bhargava came back after losing 11-3 in the fourth to win a deciding fifth game, 11-5.
What's Next
After securing their fourth top-10 win of the season, the Quakers continue their opening Ivy League road trip on Sunday for a clash with No. 15 Brown.
