Wrestling Duels With Drexel On Sunday In The Palestra

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team returns to The Palestra on January 13, hosting Drexel at 1 p.m.

The shortest road trip in all of Division I college athletics – the two team's home gyms are separated by 0.4 miles – the rivalry has a neighborly vibe as the two schools share a partnership alongside the Pennsylvania Regional Training Center and also work closely with Beat The Streets Philadelphia to enrich the lives of young men and women in Philadelphia through wrestling and education.

That doesn't mean there aren't big stakes in the dual meet. Both sides are looking for crucial wins inside the EIWA with the calendar now flipped to 2019 and March looming in the distance. The Quakers have 11 dual meets between now and the EIWA Championships – 10 of which are against EIWA foes starting on Sunday.

Notes To Know…
  • The all-time series between the two teams is a tight one. Each team was won 14 meetings, with the 1981 meet resulting in a 20-20 tie.
  • The Dragons have won the last three after ending Penn's 13-match winning streak in the series between 1992-2015.
  • There has been quite a bit of turnover from last year to this season for both teams. There is only one expected rematch from last year's dual. The Quakers will have a new starter at all 10 weights, while Drexel is likely to have seven new starters.
  • Senior Joe Oliva was one of three winners for the Quakers in the dual meet last season, picking up a 10-7 win over Evan Barczak at 149 pounds. Each wrestler has bumped up a weight this season and they're expected to meet on Sunday.
