PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team closed out the inaugural Conference Crossover with an 8-0 loss to No. 2 North Carolina Sunday at Ellen Vagelos Field.
The Tar Heels offense came out firing from the start of the game, scoring after four minutes of play. The Quakers were determined to produce a quick response, but were unable to break down a stout North Carolina defense.
Julia Russo fired a strong shot on goal, but it was saved by the Carolina goalkeeper. A goal from a penalty corner and another from a swift counter attack saw the Tar Heels enter halftime up 3-0.
Carolina come out firing after the half, scoring two goals within the first three minutes after play resumed. The Quakers continued to fight, with
Ava Rosati making some quality saves.
Alexa Schneck hit a strong backhanded shot towards goal, but Tar Heel goalkeeper Alex Haplin reacted quickly to make the save.
The Tar Heels responded to a Penn offensive surge with a surge of their own, scoring two goals in five minutes.
Despite a tough game against a top team, Penn looks forward to it's next game. The Quakers will travel to Villanova to face the Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 7 at 4:00 p.m. The Quakers will then return to Ellen Vagelos Field the following Sunday to face No. 18 Saint Joseph's.
