PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team lost to No. 16 Iowa on Friday after a trio of late goals for the Hawkeyes.
Penn's strong defensive performance was outlasted by a relentless Iowa offense. The Quakers were able to stifle the Hawkeye attack until late in the second half through their high pressure defense and a strong performance from goalie,
Ava Rosati.Â
The two sides came out strong after a scoreless first half. Penn earned a pair of corners early in the half.
Lily Clarkson found
Paige Meily on each corner, but both of Meily's shots were blocked.
Shortly after the two corners, Penn earned their fifth corner of the game.
Lily Clarkson found
Alexa Schneck at the edge of the circle, but Schneck's shot was saved by the Iowa goalkeeper.Â
Iowa opened the scoring just before the 60th minute after Anthe Nijziel found the net on the Hawkeye's sixth corner of the game. Iowa earned another corner shortly afterwards. Nijziel shot again but Rosati made the save. Katie Birch jumped quickly on the rebound to score her fifth goal of the season.Â
Iowa scored a third goal with 30 seconds left in the game.
The Quakers return to Philadelphia and will host University City rival, Drexel, on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ellen Vagelos Field.Â
