How it Happened

Heading into the final double-header of the season, the Quakers looked to end the year on a high note against the Ivy rival after taking game one on Friday.

Like the day before it took a few times through the order for the bats to finally get going. Until then, it was Jennifer Brann who stood strong in the circle. The sophomore pitcher gave up two runs in the third as the Quakers went down 2-0, but threw four other scoreless innings to keep Penn in the game. Brann struck out just one batter, but forced 11 fly outs and seven ground outs.

Nine of the first 10 Red and Blue batters failed to get on base, but finally in the fourth, Lucy Yang doubled to right field to bring in Sarah Cwiertnia to put the Quakers on the board.

Down 2-1 headed into the sixth, the Penn bats finally heated up. Jessica England scored on a Jurie Joyner double to tie the score. Molly Oretsky gave her team the lead with sac fly bringing in Joyner. Finally Tabitha Dyer expanded the lead to 5-2 with a single to center field that allowed two more runs to come in and then finally came in herself to wrap up the five-run inning.

With all of the momentum, Clare Sebastianelli delivered the final shot with a three run home run in the top of the seventh. With nine unanswered runs, the Quakers took the first game 9-2 over the Tigers to clinch the series win.

Going for the sweep in the final game of the series, the Red and Blue got on the board right away in the first inning to take the early lead. It was Jurie Joyner with the RBI on a single to right bringing home England.

Despite 21 runs being scored in the first two games combined for the Quakers, game three was much lighter on the scoring

Princeton came back in the second with a home-run of its own to tie the score at one. Mason Spichiger replaced Abigail Abramson in the circle, just as Abramson did for Spichigier on Friday. The senior threw three straight scoreless innings allowing her team to take the lead back in the fifth on a Lucy Yang single up the middle.

The Quakers added one more to the narrow one run lead in the sixth when Molly Oretsky took advantage of a wild pitch to score and make it 3-1.

Spichiger gave up one run in the sixth, but back-to-back fly outs in the seventh sealed the victory and the sweep as the Quakers defeated Princeton in game three, 3-2.

What's Next

The Quakers sweep over Princeton wraps up the 2018 season for the Penn softball program. Despite a rocky start, Penn won 16 of its last 26 games including 11 at Penn Park to finish the year 17-20.
