How it Happened
After a day's break, the Quakers got back in action playing two more games in Clearwater. On Tuesday they would play Niagara and South Dakota State while looking to get their first win of the season. Unfortunately, the Red and Blue would endure heart-break in back-to-back games. After tying the game at five against Niagara, Penn fell 8-6 in eight innings and then after tying the game in dramatic fashion against South Dakota, they fell in nine, 7-6.Â
Against Niagara, Penn played catchup for much of the game. While Spichiger had a season high four strikeouts, she allowed her third home run of the season bringing in three runs in the top of the third inning. A double from
Sarah Ketring in the fifth brought home Yang and twin sister
Kayla Ketring to tie the game at three. Â
In the very next frame, Spichiger allowed her fourth home run of the season -- this one a solo shot. Niagara scored one more run off of a single as Penn went down 5-3. In the bottom of the sixth,
Corey Burrough hit a sacrifice fly that nearly went over the fence to bring in Yang and
Jessica England to tie the score at five headed into the seventh.Â
The Quakers had
Katie Petroski on third in the bottom of the seventh inning, but were unable to bring her home meaning they would play their third international tiebreaker of the week.Â
Niagara scored three runs in the eighth and Penn was not able to come back for a third time in falling, 8-5.Â
Looking to end the day on a high note, The Red and Blue took on the Jackrabbits from South Dakota State. Once again it was the Quakers who fell behind early in the third inning.
Jennifer Brann had back-to-back strikeouts, showing command in the circle once again after her ten-strikeout performance against Western Michigan. With two outs, however, South Dakota State hit a single to center that brought in two runs as Penn fell behind, 2-0.Â
The Quakers responded in the best way possible in the bottom of the third. After
Jessica England,
Sam Pederson and Brann loaded the bases, freshman
Lucy Yang had the biggest hit of her young career as she clouted her first home run. The grand slam gave the Quakers the 4-2 lead.
Slowly, however, South Dakota State climbed back until a three-run sixth inning put Penn down 6-4 late in the game. The Red and Blue needed a rally in the bottom of the seventh to stay alive. Again, it was the freshmen who came up big when needed.
Tabitha Dyer and Yang started off the rally with base hits, and then sophomore
Corey Burrough singled to center field to bring in Dyer and cut the score to 6-5. Looking to tie the score, Yang was thrown out at home on a single to third base from
Raven Houck. Just when it seemed like the rally might end, though, Brann hit a sacrifice fly to center field which allowed
Katie Petroski -- who stole third pinch running for Burrough -- to come home and tie the score at 6-6.Â
Both South Dakota State and the Quakers left runners stranded on third in the eighth. Dyer nearly won the game for Penn, but her ball just went outside the third base line for foul.Â
The Jackrabbits took the lead in the ninth on a single to center. In the bottom half of the inning, attempting to advance Dyer from second to third, Yang popped her bunt up to the catcher for the first out. Burrough then flew out to left field on a foul ball, and Houck struck out as Penn lost their second straight game in extra innings.
What's Next
Penn will look to get their first win in what will be two rematches on Wednesday as they play Niagara once again and Western Michigan.
