LOS ANGELES - In the opening match of its spring break trip to California, the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team was edged out in a 4-3 battle at Loyola Marymount on Sunday, dropping the Quakers to 5-6 on the year.
Penn grabbed the early momentum by taking the doubles point, earning wins on courts two and three.
Marta Kowalska and
Marija Curnic cruised to a 6-2 win on the third court, before the Lions roared back to a win on court one. It all came down to a tiebreak on court two, where
Jimena Rodriguez-Benito and
OJ Singh teamed up for a 7-4 victory after the 6-6 tie to take the point for the Quakers.
LMU then countered with two-straight wins in singles, first on court one as
Lina Qostal fell to nationally ranked Veronic Miroshnichenko, while Rodriguez-Benito stumbled on court three. Kowalska evened the match up at 2-2 with a straight sets win on court four, before LMU vaulted ahead again with a victory on court five.
Singh came up clutch for Penn on court six, grabbing a win in three sets, and all eyes turned their attention to
Ashley Zhu on court two. By the slimmest of margins, Zhu dropped a 7-6(6), 7-6(3) match, giving the home team the win.
Penn is back in action on Tuesday, March 6, visiting Long Beach State at 5 p.m. EST.
