SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite fighting back in the ninth inning with a valiant two-run effort, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team was unable to close a three-score gap and fell to Wofford for the third consecutive time, 5-4. The Quakers offense never fully powered up during the game, as double RBI singles by both senior
Andrew Murnane (4th inning) and sophomore
Chris Adams (9th inning) marked the lone scoring plays for the day.
Wofford 5, Penn 4
WP: Grant Byers (1-1)
LP: Mitchell Holcomb (0-1)
SV: Jake Hershman (2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After surrendering a one-run lead to start the game, Penn (1-5, 0-0 Ivy) battled back on the bat of Murnane, as the senior plated both sophomore
Peter Matt and junior
Matt McGeagh to push the Quakers out in front to close out the fourth. Wofford (6-5, 0-0 SoCon) immediately knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning, driving one in on a fielder's choice, before retaking the lead one frame later in the fifth. The Penn offense remained relatively quiet until the ninth, as Adams lofted a pitch into shallow right field to score two before Wofford pitching clinched the game with a ground out.
Holcomb pitched through five innings, surrendering four runs on six hits before being replaced by freshman
Robby Cerulle and sophomore
Jacob Sadowitz. Wofford starter Grant Byers threw six and two-third frames before being pulled, watching as it took three Terrier replacements to close out the final two innings, including one for each of the final two outs.
