Men's Lacrosse Doubled Up by No. 4 Yale in New Haven, 12-6

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team allowed a five-goal run to No. 4 Yale bridging the first and second quarters on Saturday at Reese Stadium, and the Quakers could not make it up as they took a 12-6 loss to the Bulldogs.

Penn is now 5-5 overall, and fell to 1-2 in Ivy League play. Yale has won seven in a row since dropping its season opener, and improved to 3-0 in Ivy play.

This series has been defined by close games for more than a decade, but Yale got up by three goals in the second quarter and never really let Penn get back into it in winning its sixth in a row over the Quakers.

Yale scored in the game's first minute, Jack Tigh tallying an unassisted goal, but Penn responded with a man-down goal by Simon Mathias after a scrambled clear—the Quakers' first man-down goal of the season—and then Adam Goldner converted a man-up goal off a Mathias feed to give the Quakers a 2-1 lead. Tigh again scored unassisted to start Yale off on its run, and then Joe Sessa rocketed a shot in late to make it 3-2 Bulldogs after one.

Yale then scored the first three goals of the second period, the first two coming just 31 seconds apart early in the quarter and the third on an individual effort by All-American attackman Ben Reeves. Goldner finally got the Quakers back on the board, using a long individual run from one side of the goal to the other before he scored. It ended a goalless drought of 19:41 and made the score 6-3 at the half.

A defensive slipup in Penn's zone allowed Jackson Morrill to score easily from behind the goal to make it 7-3 just 1:06 into the third quarter, but the Quakers got it back in another man-up situation as Goldner completed the hat trick off a Mike Lamon feed. However, the Bulldogs needed only 29 seconds to go back up by four, Tigh breaking Penn's ride and finding Reeves wide open in front for an easy conversion. Sessa made it 9-4 shortly after that, but just 16 seconds later Connor Keating ripped a shot from the top to get the Quakers back within four. It was the senior All-America candidate's second long-pole goal this season and the 30th of his career.

Yale started the fourth quarter quickly, again tallying a goal in the opening minute to make it 10-5. Reilly Hupfeldt got one back with a bullish run and lefty shot, but Tigh quickly re-established the five-goal margin with his third of the day and then added another extra-man goal shortly after that. As it turned out, that closed out the scoring on the day.

Penn actually outshot Yale on the day, 29-28, even though the Quakers were doubled up in the goals department and lost the face-off battle, 16-6. Reed Junkin had five saves in the Penn goal, a number matched by his Bulldogs counterpart Jack Starr.
