PHILADELPHIA – No. 8 Penn did all it could to claw back from a 5-0 deficit against defending national champion Maryland in the first half, but a mid-game run by the No. 2-ranked Terps stifled any hope of the comeback being completed by the Quakers in a 13-7 loss at Franklin Field.
With the loss, Penn (7-1) falls from the ranks of the unbeaten, having entered the game as one of four undefeated teams in the country.
Notes To Know…
- The Quakers held Maryland's No. 1-ranked Scoring Offense to its lowest scoring output of the season. Maryland had not scored fewer than 15 goals all season and entered the game averaging 17.14 goals-per-game.
- Goalkeeper Mikaila Cheeseman made 14 saves, recording seven in each half. Her 14 saves ties her career high set last weekend at No. 20 Duke.
- The two teams combined for 66 total shots, with 47 of them hitting goal. Maryland's Meghan Taylor had 13 saves to match Cheeseman's 14.
- After pretty much splitting the draw in the first half, Maryland holding a slight 7-6 edge, the Terps won all nine draw controls in the second half.
- Emily Rogers-Healion had two goals and an assist, giving her 130 career points – No. 12 all-time by a Quaker.
How It Happened
The Quakers did not score until almost midway through the first half, going 0-for-7 until
Zoe Belodeau took a Rogers-Healion pass and fired home Penn's first goal with 15:29 to play in the first half. Unfortunately for Penn, Maryland had already scored five times. Jen Giles and Megan Whittle each had scored twice in that run, sandwiched around a Caroline Steel free position goal.
Belodeau's goal started a 4-1 Penn run as the Quakers cut Maryland's lead to 6-4 with 5:13 to play in the first half. Belodeau added another in that run, off a great pass from
Caroline Cummings, while
Erin Barry and
Gabby Rosenzweig also scored.
It appeared the Quakers had all the momentum, but Maryland connected twice in the final 1:09 of the opening half to head to halftime ahead, 8-4. Brindi Griffin scored first with 1:09 left in the half, and Giles finished the first half with a free position goal just nine seconds before halftime.
Those two goals were part of a 6-0 Maryland run over a span of 19:19 as the Terps turned a 6-4 lead into a 12-4 advantage. Penn would finally end its skid with 15:54 remaining in the game off a Rogers-Healion goal. She would add a second with 6:02 remaining and Barry would cap the scoring with a goal in the final two minutes.
The Quakers are back at home on March 24, hosting Brown in Ivy League play at 3 p.m. The Quakers will honor their 2008 Final Four team during the game which will take place on Ace Adams Field at Penn Park.
