Women's Basketball Clipped at St. Johns in WNIT

QUEENS, N.Y. - They say all good things come to an end, an unfortunately the University of Pennsylvania (22-9, 11-3 Ivy) women's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Monday night in the second round of the WNIT, dropping a 53-48 decision to St. John's in Carnesecca Arena.

PENN NEWS AND NOTES
*Lauren Whitlatch led the Quakers on offense with a stellar shooting performance from behind-the-arc. The senior captain finished with 15 points, all from deep, on 5-for-10 shooting. Whitlatch wraps up her career with the Red and Blue with 166 3-pointers, moving up to sole possession of third place in program history.

*Whitlatch was joined in double figures by Eleah Parker and Michelle Nwokedi. Parker posted 15 points, including seven in the fourth quarter alone, with 11 rebounds, marking the seventh double-double of her career. Nwokedi was two rebounds shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds. The senior finishes her time at Penn with 1,517 points (fifth all-time) and 1,048 rebounds (second all-time).

*Parker finishes her freshman year with 356 points, the most for a freshman since Alyssa Baron's 464 her rookie season in 2010.

*Penn falls to 0-1 all-time against St. John's. The Quakers are 2-2 all-time in the WNIT.

*The senior class of Beth Brzozowski, Michelle Nwokedi, Anna Ross and Lauren Whitlatch end their careers tied with last year's squad for the most wins of a class in program history with 89.

*The Quakers had 17 turnovers on the night, their most since 19 miscues against Cornell earlier this season. Those turnovers led to 16 points for the Red Storm.

*Penn went just 4-for-10 from the free throw line. Conversely, St. John's made the most of its opportunities at the charity stripe at 13-for-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Quakers got off to a hot start offensively behind the play of Whitlatch, who nailed a 3-pointer three seconds into the game and another just minutes later for a 6-2 Penn lead. The Red Storm responded with an 11-0 run, taking advantage of missed shots inside from Penn to take a 13-6 lead. The Red and Blue were able to right the ship some before the quarter, ending the first 10 minutes down 14-8.

Penn opened the second quarter with an inspired effort, using an 8-2 run to tie the game at 16 after a three from Ross. The Quakers held St. John's without a field goal for over six minutes of action, while two more three's from Whitlatch pushed the Penn advantage to 22-17. Penn held all the momentum after a coast-to-coast steal and finish from Ross, but a three in the final minute gave the Johnnies some life, cutting the Quaker lead to 24-22 at the break.

It was a cold quarter for both teams in the third period, with each squad going blank from the field for over four minutes in the heart of the quarter. A layup from Katie Kinum off a St. John's turnover gave Penn the lead at 28-27, and the teams traded the lead before a 3-pointer at the buzzer pushed St. John's in front 32-30 with 10 minutes to play.

The Quakers found life offensivley in the fourth quarter behind the play of Eleah Parker inside, but unfortunately for the Red and Blue, St. John's lit up for 21 points in the period. After Parker scored seven straight for Penn for a two-point lead, St. John's responded with five in a row to jump back ahead. Nwokedi countered for the Quakers, but a 6-0 run from the Red Storm, including four points at the free throw line, gave the home team a 51-43 lead with 2:25 remaining.

Penn refused to wilt, finding success in its full court press to force three-straight turnovers, triming the deficit to 51-48. Down three with seconds remaining, Penn drew up a play for Whitlatch but the senior's shot came up short, resulting in a runout for the Red Storm to seal the victory.
