HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Backed by senior
Gabe Kleiman on the mound, Penn held off the Knights' offensive weapons for the first three innings of play before Fairleigh Dickinson woke up in the fourth. The Knights picked up four runs during the frame, including a three-run homer, to grab what would prove to be an insurmountable lead. Despite the Quakers fighting back that same inning with a run on a wild pitch, and later junior
Sean Phelan's two-run jack in the eighth, the FDU early output managed to hold off a potential comeback.
Even with the five earned runs over six frames of work, Kleiman still showcased a strong arm, dishing out nine strikeouts and just two walks in the loss. Relievers
Dylan Mulvihill,
Cole Sichley and
Grant Guillory all commanded an inning each, combining to allow just one hit along the way. Knights' starter Evan Raiburn was nearly as impressive as his counterpart through six frames of his own, picking up six strikeouts in earning the victory.
GAME TWO
The usually quick-scoring Penn offense proved quiet once again during the early stages of game two, as Fairleigh Dickinson grabbed a three-run lead with one in each of the first, second and fifth innings. Behind the efforts of a trio of batters -- senior
Andrew Murnane, sophomore
Chris Adams and freshman
Eduardo Malinowski -- the Quakers grabbed their first advantage of the day, as the former knocked in two with a single while both underclassmen compiled an RBI each. The sixth frame would prove fruitful, as well, as junior
Matt McGeagh led off with a solo home run before junior
Matt O'Neill scored on a wild pitch.
Even with the excitement of the comeback bid, the star power behind the victory lies with Scafidi, whose confident seven innings kept the FDU offense contained. The sophomore right-hander picked up his first win of the year with the outing, racking up six strikeouts, five hits and no walks.Â
NEXT UP
The Quakers continue their four-game series with Fairleigh Dickinson tomorrow with another pair of games, set for noon first pitch.
