HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Compared with the second game, both squad's offensive showcasing during the day's opening matchup were exceptionally lackluster, as the Knights knocked in two runs during the second inning and another in the third while Penn managed to notch its only run off an FDU balk.
In fact, the shortened contest (seven innings) morphed into a pitcher's duel quickly, as Quakers starter
Mitchell Holcomb battled it out with the Knights' Corey Zeller. The former managed five strikeouts and allowed just seven hits during a complete six innings of work; the latter put together five and two-thirds frames on the mound before relief from Joe Flack sealed the win.
GAME TWO
Similar to yesterday's victory, the Quakers initially came from behind before surging to a late lead, as Fairleigh Dickinson jumped out to a three-run margin through four frames. Penn battled back with a monster fifth inning as the bats of McGeagh, O'Neill and Adams plated six of the Quakers' eight in the frame (the other two coming from bases-loaded walks). Penn would rack up insurance runs during both the sixth and eighth innings before concluding the game with a powerful four-score ninth frame, closing the door on any potential Knights' comeback.
Senior
Jack Hartman held down the mound to start the game for the Quakers, but relief came early in the fourth from Mulvihill, whose inning and a third earned him his first win of the season. Three other members of the Penn bullpen registered time, as well, with
John Alan Kendrick,
Robby Cerulle and
Jacob Sadowitz combining for four innings to close out the victory.Â
NEXT UP
The Quakers open their home slate 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon against Lehigh, hosting the Mountain Hawks at Meiklejohn Stadium.
