ITHACA, N.Y. - For the first time since a 7-2 victory in 2005, the University of Pennsylvania men's squash team has defeated No. 15 Cornell on the road in Ithaca. The Quakers defeated the Big Red 9-0 on Friday night ending drought that has spanned over 10 years.
The win against the Big Red puts the Red and Blue at 4-2 in the Ivy League with one more to play. Penn will now return home for the season finale set at Ringe against Columbia at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The team will also celebrate senior day.
The Quakers swept seven of the nine matches winning in just three games. Freshman
Andrew Douglas improved his record to 12-2 and 5-1 in the Ivy after a 11-9, 11-6, 11-7 victory. At number two,
Hayes Murphy toughed out a second game that extended past 11 points as he won 13-11 and won the third 11-3.
David Yacobucci had one of the more impressive matches of the day as he dropped just 11 points on his way to a 11-3, 11-4, 11-4 win.
Marwan Mahmoud split the opening two games losing the second 11-5. The senior bounced back however taking the next two 11-6, 11-6. As a group, the seniors went 4-0 to start their final regular season weekend. That included a 3-0 win by
Derek Hsue who won his first match of the year winning by the score 11-6, 11-5, 13-11.
Hsue has come up on the wrong side of three five-game matches this season going 0-3 in such matches this season. Like the team in Ithaca, Hsue ended a winning drought of his own.
The Quakers will be back in action to wrap up the regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m. to celebrate senior day as they host Columbia.
