NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Pennsylvania men's squash team entered the final day of the Potter Cup hoping to end on a high note. After back to back losses to Harvard and Rochester, Penn looked to avenge their 5-4 loss to Princeton from earlier in the season at Ringe. They did just that as they lost just two matches in what was 7-2 victory over the Tigers to close out the Potter Cup.
How it Happened
The Quakers concluded the Potter Cup on Sunday with yet another rematch, this time against Princeton, a team Penn fell to 5-4 earlier in the year at Ringe. This time around, The Red and Blue were on their game determined to end the Potter Cup with a win.
Marwan Mahmoud,
Derek Hsue,
Yash Bhargava, and
Max Reed all came out with wins to give the Quakers an early 4-0 lead. At the No. 3 slot, Mahmoud toughed out a 3-2, five-game victory. The senior came back after losing the second and third games as he found himself down 1-2. Mahmoud won the fourth 11-6 and then toughed out the fifth and final game 11-7 to win 3-2.
Bhargava won a five-game match of his own at No. 6 as he overcame losing the fourth game 11-4 to bounce back and win the decider 11-9.
After falling to Youssef Ibrahim 3-2 at Ringe, freshman
Andrew Douglas avenged what was two straight losses to the Princeton freshman and Ivy League rookie of the year. The two had played at the World Junior Squash Championships last summer with Ibrahim getting the win then as well. Douglas avenged both losses as he won 3-0 at No. 1 winning all three games 11-8.
