Hartford, Conn. - The University of Pennsylvania men's squash team looked to avenge their loss to No. 3 Harvard from earlier in the year in the first round of the Potter Cup on Friday afternoon. However, that would not be the case as the Quakers fell 7-2 to the Crimson and will now fall down into the consolation bracket. Penn will play the loser of Rochester and Columbia Saturday at 2 p.m.
How it Happened
After losing the first game,
Marwan Mahmoud and
Max Reed each took the second game in their respective matches to even them up at 1-1. At one point, Mahmoud was up 8-5 in the third in his match while Reed went up late in the third in his match as well. That's when things took a turn for Penn. Mahmoud and Reed each fell 12-10 on their way to losing 3-1.
Derek Hsue also went down 3-1 to put the Quakers in a 3-0 deficit after the first round of matches.Â
The second round of matches didn't fair much better as
James Watson,
Hayes Murphy, and
Karim Hussein each fell 3-0 as Harvard clinched the match with a 6-0 lead.Â
To close out the match, it was the freshmen in the lineup that stood out. Freshman
Yash Bhargava came away with a 3-0 win toughing out a 13-11 third game to close out the match.
Andrew Douglas also defeated Saadeldin Aboudaish 3-0 after winning 12-10 in the third. Harvard's number one player, Aboudaish has lost four matches this season and two of them have came at the hands of Douglas.Â
