PRINCETON – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team concluded the 2017-18 regular season with a pair of losses in EIWA competition, turning the corner to set its sights on the EIWA Championships two weeks from now at Hofstra.
The Quakers, undermanned once again with injuries rearing their head, were knocked off by Princeton, 28-15, before suffering a 30-9 loss to No. 25 Drexel.
No. 17
May Bethea capped his dual meet career with a pair of overtime wins. He opened his day with a 10-8 sudden victory win over Princeton's No. 19 Jonathan Schleifer, avenging a loss from earlier this season at Midlands. In the nightcap, he scored a gutty takedown in overtime to pick up his second win of the season over Drexel's Ebed Jarrell, 12-10.
After a one-point loss to No. 17 Patrick Brucki of Princeton to start his day, No. 9
Frank Mattiace picked up a Top-20 win with a 4-3 decision over Drexel's No. 16 Stephen Loiseau. It was a first period takedown against Brucki that was the difference in the opener. In the nightcap, Mattiace's first period takedown was confirmed by video review and made the difference.
Gianni Ghione was 1-1 on the day, picking up a pinfall win at Princeton with a third-period stick of Jonathan Gomez off a patiently executed cradle. Against Drexel, he bumped up a weight as Penn looked to find a path to the win, but was just short, 2-1, on riding time to Julian Flores at 141.
Joe Oliva picked up a 10-7 win over Evan Barczak at 149 in the Drexel dual. A back and forth match saw Oliva score a reversal in the third and add an insurance takedown late for the win.
Tyler Hall was 1-1 on the day at heavyweight. He defeated Princeton's Christian Arraneo, 7-6, but was forced to injury default in the Drexel match. Hall led, 3-1, late when Josh Murphy scored a tying takedown. In the process, Hall's knee was tied up and he could not continue.
