Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Downs Delaware, 12-5, To Open 2018

PHILADELPHIA – A season which began with the University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team ranked No. 12 saw the Quakers put up a 12-spot as the Red and Blue decked Delaware, 12-5, in the 2018 season opener.

The Quakers (1-0) saw six different players score goals – including three freshman – while junior Maggie Smith made six saves in her 30:00 of play to earn her first career win.

Notes To Know
  • Alex Condon scored four times, her seventh game with 4+ goals over her last 18 outings dating back to last season.
  • Gabby Rosenzweig had a hat trick, her fourth career game with three goals. All four of her hat tricks have come over her last seven games – she has 19 goals in that span.
  • Freshman Zoe Belodeau totaled four points in her Penn debut on a goal and a game-high three assists.
  • Freshman Abby Bosco scored on her first career shot, netting Penn's first goal of the season 3:18 into the game.
  • Freshman Laura Crawford also scored on her first career shot.
  • Penn had a 12-7 edge on the draw, led by a 6-2 advantage in the first half. Erin Barry won four draws, while Natalie Stefan and Belodeau each had three.
  • The Quakers had 12 caused turnovers as a team, led by Barry's four. Rosenzweig and Lauren O'Mara each had two.
  • 10 of the 16 players to see playing time had at least one ground ball for Penn, led by Stefan who had three.
  • Penn improves to 16-3 in season openers under Karin Corbett, and are 5-0 over the last five years in season openers against Delaware.
How It Happened
The Red and Blue never trailed following Bosco's first career goal off a Belodeau pass 3:18 into the season. The Quakers would score the game's first three goals, Caroline Cummings and Rosenzweig scoring to give Penn a 3-0 lead 5:05 into the season.

Delaware would answer with a Christine Long goal, but Condon scored her first of four 3:16 later to regain the three-goal lead.

Neither team scored for the next 10 minutes until Delaware's Claire D'Antonio netted her first of three with 10:39 to play. Rosenzweig would answer just 33 seconds late, rolling down the right side and firing far post to give Penn a 5-2 lead.

The Red and Blue would not score over the next 15:13 of game play, but the Penn defense held tall. Delaware managed just two goals of its own over that span, cutting the lead to one, but that was as close as the Blue Hens would get.

Condon scored twice in a row to start a three-goal Penn run to push the Quakers to an 8-4 lead. D'Antonio would complete her hat trick with 13:19 to play, but four Penn goals over the final 11:12 shut the door and secured Penn's first win of 2018.
