PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's squash team fell 5-4 to the Columbia Lions on Sunday afternoon. The Quakers finish 3-4 in the Ivy. Sunday also marked the final match played at Ringe as the facility will go under reconstruction before next year.
Penn celebrated senior day honoring
Melissa Alves,
Marie Stephan, and
Lauren Wolf. Alves and Stephan have consistently played top-3 in the women's lineup while Stephan went undefeated her first two years at Penn.
Alves may have played the match of the day on Sunday. Things weren't looking good for the senior as she lost the first two games, including the first 13-15. After losing the second 11-7, Alves flipped a switch and wasn't going to leave Ringe without a win. The senior won the next three games losing a total of just 12 points, 11-3, 11-3, 11-6.
Also winning a five game match was freshman
Julia Buchholz. Buchholz lost the first game 11-7, but won the next two 12-10, 11-8. The Freshman lost the fourth 4-11. With momentum against her, Buchholz won the fifth and final game 11-7.
Stephan earned a 3-0 sweep as she lost just 10 points in her match. The senior won 11-2,11-8,11-0 to end her career at Ringe.
Reeham Salah earned the fourth win for the Quakers as she won 3-0 as well.
As has been the case many times this season due to injuries, Penn just couldn't get a win at the bottom of the lineup.
Nicole Windreich won the first game 11-3, but lost the next three that ended with an 11-0 fourth game loss.
The Quakers will look at the CSA rankings on Monday and hope that they did enough this season to earn a spot in the Howe Cup.
