PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team opens Ivy League competition this weekend, with a pair of dual meets in New England. The Quakers will grapple with Brown on February 3 (12 p.m.) before heading to Harvard for a meet with the Crimson at 6 p.m.
Notes To Know:
- Penn is 39-21 all-time against Brown in dual meets. The two teams have split the last two meetings, including an 18-16 win for the Bears at Penn last year.
- The Quakers are 11-1 in their last 12 trips to Providence.
- There are three potential rematches from last year's dual set for Saturday. Penn's Joe Heyob will look to avenge a 3-2 decision loss to C.J. LaFragola, while Tyler Hall will look to get a win back over Ian Butterbrodt following a 5-2 loss. Frank Mattiace defeated Tucker Ziegler, 14-3, last season in the dual meet.
- Joe Velliquette will look to get a chance to avenge a pair of losses this season at the hands of Brown's Justin Staudenmayer. The two met at the Bearcat Open and at Midlands.
- The Quakers are 43-31-2 all-time against Harvard. The Red and Blue have won 25 of the last 26 meetings dating back to the 1990-91 season.
- Last year, Penn defeated the Crimson, 27-17, in The Palestra.
- There are potential rematches from last year's dual at 149 pounds, 184, and 197. Joe Heyob defeated Kanon Dean, 2-0, last season while Frank Mattiace knocked off Logan Kirby by fall at 1:02. Penn's Joe Oliva will look to flip the result on a pinfall loss to Harvard's Hunter Ladnier last season.
- Heyob also defeated Dean, 5-4, for seventh place at the EIWA Championships last season and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
- Mattiace has wrestled his other potential opponent against Harvard, pinning Rico Stormer at 058 at the Keystone Classic this season.
- Head coach Roger Reina guided the Quakers to eight Ivy League championships during his previous 19-year stint as head coach at his alma mater.
- Reina is 13-8 all-time against Brown, with wins in his last 13 matches as head coach against the Bears from 1994-2005.
- Reina is 16-4 all-time against Harvard, with wins in his last 15 dual meets against the Crimson from 1992-2005.
