LANCASTER, Pa. - For the second consecutive year, the University of Pennsylvania men's squash team defeated No. 11 Drexel in the final of the Pennsylvania State Classic, 8-1, to win the title. The Quakers defeated Franklin & Marshall and Drexel by a combined, 17-1, score which included six more sweeps on Sunday. Penn will play its first home matches of the season next week against No. 9 George Washington and No. 13 Virginia.
How it Happened
For the second straight day, the Quakers were successful at the top and showed off their depth at the bottom of the lineup.
Andrew Douglas won 3-0 once again to get the win at the Red and Blue's number one slot.
While inexperienced, they certainly didn't show it. Penn's three freshman,
Aly Abou Eleinen,
Michael Mehl, and
James Flynn completed their perfect weekends. Abou Eleinen in convincing, 11-2, 11-4, 11-5, fashion. Flynn also won in three games at number six, 11-7,11-6,11-5. Mehl needed an extra game, but showed adversity after splitting the opening two. He toughed out the final two games, 11-9, 11-9 to win 3-1.
Yash Bhargava lost the opening game in his match, but bounced back to take the remaining three to also win 3-1.
Penn's only loss came at number two.
David Yacobucci fell 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 in the Quaker win.
What's Next
The Quakers return home next weekend to take on No. 9 George Washington on Saturday at 4 p.m. and No. 11 Virginia on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Kline and Specter Squash Center.
